Class 1
Intro and focus on describing things (nouns, adjectives) About 15 minutes: Introducing ourselves: name, profession, reason for being in the class, then a bit of conversation starters: best thing that happened to you this week, guilty pleasures, etc. (will change it up for each student). 15 minutes: tips for speaking English fluently. I have a document on this, perhaps someone could put it in PowerPoint for me. Accept imperfections, practice several times a day, ask questions, use the internet (for different accents, with closed captioning, etc.), take notes, see yourself as an English speaker, think in English, focus on fluency, don’t give up. About 30 minutes: images of some works of quirky works of art, such as Magritte or Dali. Questions about what they see: colors, shapes, location, meaning. 30 minutes: work in pairs, 1 person shows the other an object they have with them and describes it (physical characteristics, importance for them, etc.) and vice versa. Then report back to the class about the other’s object. 30-40 minutes: get-out-of-your-seat activities such as a fashion show (one person is the model and another is called upon to describe what they’re wearing), restaurant (waiter and customer), etc. 20-30 minutes: reading short paragraphs and identifying descriptive adjectives and then using those adjectives in a sentence. 5-10 minutes: what they learned, what they would like to focus on in the next classes, etc.
Class 2
Active verbs and daily activities. ‘A day in the life of….” Stories of childhood, etc.
Class 3
Prepositions, giving directions, traveling, etc.
Class 4
Opinions (on current topics) and future plans
